Sumbawa Secrets – Round 2

Hi Amazing Peeps,

Ok round two of Sumbawa secrets revealed.

This one has been in the works for weeks and I really wanted to share earlier but I really wanted to see how it went.

It is this!20171120_131336

Yes we got a parachute sail!

Actually we got 2. This picture is of the smaller, 24ft one but we also have this one.20171014_081003

It’s 28ft.

We haven’t put this one up yet but I am looking forward it.

When we did this trial, we were going up to Bantry Bay, there was a SSE wind or it was supposed to be.  There was actually no wind but we thought that we would give it a try.

At just wisps of wind, it filled up. When let out, we would go from 0.5knots to 2.3knots.20171120_131142

It was seriously cool!

We did find a few flaws though. Our idea was to bring it down, we would release the bottom line and then haul it in. Well this didn’t work.20171120_131115

When we let out the bottom line, she just filled up more. Then we had the halyard through the spinnaker loop at the to of the mast but nothing attached to bring it to the deck – also a problem.

Then when Steve grabbed the bottom line to pull it in while the halyard was released, the chute filled again and made it really hard to pull. She ended up just touching the water but we want to avoid any of the chute or lines in the water.

We did find that having a slightly higher wind is preferable and because we were in amongst hills, sometimes we would get a slight East wind, which would pull the chute around and pretty much bring us to a standstill.

This was a great first run and I think great conditionsto try it in because finding a few ‘need to fix’ items, it was easy to deal with. In even 7 knots of wind, this would have been more of a pain to sort out.

We have added a pull-down line already to make dropping easier which works in with the halyard and the bottom line runs back to a winch in the cockpit, which will make winding in faster too.

We will put it up properly on our run up to Pittwater, so I will update you on that one.

That’s all for now. More secrets to come along with further kids / sailing stories.

Cheers to all your awesomeness.
