Since starting this post, I have been asked to write about how could possibly afford this. This was a question I asked myself many times before. We have always wanted to travel and envied people that did but our first words out of our mouths was ‘We can’t afford that.’ Here are just a few things that have changed in our thinking.
Firstly, it’s all about attitude. In the book Think and Grow Rich, Napoleon Hill talks about how we think about our financial situation continues it on the same path as it has been. That a thinking of abundance is a precursor to abundance. Pam Grout in her book E-Squared mentioned that scarcity is a programmed thought, that we are conditioned to think this way.
I know what you all have just done – you have just rolled your eyes and said that that is a butch of BS. You are thinking ‘This women is an IDIOT! It is not just a thought process because if it was, I wouldn’t have so little and be struggling so much.’ I know because this is what I thought too. How could money, or my lack of, be because of how I look at it? Bernard Lietaer who co-designed the Euro, in his book Of Human Wealth said the scarcity was just CULTURAL PROGRAMMING – this is from a man that has been in the field of money for more than 30 years. If we are always telling ourselves we can afford it, we are never going to be able to afford it.
Secondly, when you have no mortgage or rent to pay, no land tax, no rates, no utilities, you find that there is quite a bit of money to travel. Then there is the notion ‘I need a stable paycheck.’ No paycheck is really stable and the jobs that you can get while on the road are fantastic – I’ve researched this a lot even though we haven’t left yet. I have also heard the comments that Gasoline/Petrol is expensive – how will you afford it? Again if your not paying for everything else, then there is plenty of money.
Yes we do have a house, it has a small mortgage and we are thinking of selling it or renting it out to someone that may need it. This would give us a little money to play with but I’m sure most of you, if not renting or paying a mortgage would have money to travel. You just have to take that leap.
FEAR is what stops people. Fear is our biggest enemy and it is so unfounded. Everyone has thought about one thing or another and gone ‘I’d love to do that.’ You can! You are only on this Earth for a flutter of time. In the grand scheme of things, a flutter of a butterflies wings and we’re gone. Our choices NOW make who we are, not our past. Not what our parents did/didn’t do, not ‘I’m just not able to do that’, not anything about our past makes up incapable. The last thing I want to do is get to my dying days and look back and wish I had taken that step, wish I had done something amazing with my life. We all want to be amazing and do something amazing, and we all can. Don’t let your mind, your parents, your friends, your colleagues or your surroundings dictate who you are. You are amazing TODAY! YOU can make those choices TODAY! You are capable NOW, no someday but NOW! Believe that it is possible and it will be.
To those of you who want to travel America, Europe, Asia or Africa, go out and do it and let me know how your going. Even if you start preparing, I want to know how the process is changing your perceptions, your relationships and your desires. I want to hear of your tales of adventure, start your own blog so I can follow it too even if it is about your desires and preparations. The Universe has a strange was of making our desires, once they stop being just one-day thoughts in the back of our brain and we start acting on them, become reality. In the Scriptures it states “All things are possible.” That statement is as true today as it was then. Let me say that again ALL THINGS not some things but ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. Don’t allow yourself to deprive yourself of that promise.
Remember we make what is around us, let us make it Fantastic!
Shalom Aleichem (Peace be to you) all
